RAKIM'S 'GHOSTWRITER'
William Micheal Griffin Jr, popularly known as Rakim, is largely considered by hip hop fans and artists alike as one of the most influential rappers, if not the most influential rapper to ever touch the mic. Known for revolutionizing how rappers flow plus his unique rapping technique is what has made him relevant to this day and time.
Due to his influence, it has not been surprising to hear rumors about him throughout his career. In the year 2019, while he was doing a round of interviews on different tv, radio, and social media platforms to promote his book Sweat the Technique, a rumor about him was slowly gaining traction in the media, and while on a shade 45 interview hosted by Lord Sear, on one of his book campaigns, the rap legend was asked to address it.
Apparently, one of his fellow rappers and longtime friend MC Serch had been spotted speaking about him while on a Vlad tv interview and had claimed of once being authorized by Lyor Cohen to ghostwrite lyrics for the legend to be part of their then-upcoming album follow the leader.
When Rakim was asked to address the truth to the claim, he couldn't hide his anger and wasn't impressed by the questioning of his credibility, he took it as MC Serch's attempt to taint his legacy.
He then quickly denied the claims and even went ahead to inform the host that he would knock the third base mc out if he ever crossed paths with him.
Looking regretful and embarrassed, the host Lord Sear, had to break the interview for some minutes while playing some music for his audience just to lighten up the mood.
On the opposite end, MC Serch had caught wind of the interview and quickly headed to his Instagram to clarify his statement. He began by stating that back in the nineties, Lyor Cohen had indeed authorized him to ghostwrite for the legendary rapper but the idea got rejected before it matured.
According to him, Rakim and Eric B were never informed about the task he had then been entrusted to accomplish. He then spoke of meeting with Lyor Cohen to present the lyrics and claimed that after reading them, the former C.E.O. was totally impressed and even went ahead to acknowledge his good penmanship.
Lyor Cohen then called Eric B while MC Serch stood by his side to hear the conversation. The third base mc then revealed that when Eric B was informed about the plan to help Rakim, he sounded angered, and immediately an argument ensued between them.
He continued on, stating that not long into the argument, he got pulled into the conversation when the phone was handed to him, but unfortunately before he would say anything, Eric B hanged up the phone on him.
After the drama, MC Serch and his former rhyme partner Pete, went ahead to use the lyrics in question on their song step into the am, as the rap duo Third Base.
